  (2014·寶雞中學適應性訓練)

  A.The history of the city

B.The city attracted all kinds of immigrants and developed its multicultures.

C.The brief introduction to New Orleans

  D.The origin of Jazz

  E.The population of the city

F.African people arrived and they brought their own traditions including music.

  1.________

New Orleans, the city of Louisiana, is one of the most colorful and interesting places in North America. It is well known for its multicultural cuisine(菜肴) and its colonial architecture and is considered by most experts to be the birthplace of jazz, the one music style that the USA can lay claim to inventing.

  2.________

The city was founded in 1718, at a time when France owned that part of North America. Part of its persity results from the fact that it was subjected to many different influences. France sold Louisiana to Spain in 1763, got it back 40 years later, and almost immediately sold the territory to the USA.

  3.________

As the city prospered(繁榮), it became a magnet(磁鐵)for all kinds of immigrants from Europe and other parts of the USA, and was also the first choice destination of breed black slaves. The rich cultural mix led to a relaxed attitude to life and an appreciation of good food, wine, music and dancing. There were frequent festivals.

  4.________

By the end of the 1700s, people of African descent(祖先) made up more than half the city's population. Many more arrived via the Caribbean and brought with them West Indian cultural traditions. By the mid18th century, black New Orleans people were gathering socially on Sundays at a special market outside the city, where they were able to remember and practice their traditional African dance and drumming music. The roots of jazz can be traced to these events.

  5.________

Native American musicians then combined their music with the African traditions and bands playing a mixture of styles began to perform in street festivals. Europeans came to listen and contribute and the roots of jazz were established. Louis Armstrong, the most famous jazz musician of all time, was influenced by these rich musical mixtures when he heard them in the early years of the 20th century.

 ?、?閱讀表達

  閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文后的要求回答問題(請注意問題后的字數(shù)要求)。

[1]It's safe, it's simple, and it works: Drinking right amounts of water really can help you lose weight, new research shows.

[2]In what researchers claim is the firstever trial of the effect of water consumption on weight loss, scientists from Virginia Tech found that dieters who started each meal with two glasses of water lost nearly five pounds more, on average, than dieters who did not, over the course of 12 weeks. There's no shortage of clear evidence about how water might work to control your appetite (食欲). It ________ so you don't eat so much; it keeps down your thirst so that you don't turn to calorierich sodas or juices. But until now, the researchers say, there has been no true evidence that water's appetitecontrolling benefits ever translate into actual weight loss. Now there is. In the 12week study period, dieters instructed to drink water with every meal lost an average of 15.5 pounds; dieters given no instructions lost, on average, just 11 pounds.

[3]Perhaps the most surprising thing about the finding is how little we still know about healthy water consumption in general. In fact, although doctors and public health authorities regularly remind us to drink more water, very few studies give any insight into what our ideal quantity may be.

[4]The new results today suggest that many people could indeed stand to drink a little more water than they do. But if you're looking to lose weight, be aware that it is actually possible to drink too much water, and you probably won't help matters any by drinking too much water at a time. In extreme cases, it can even be deadly. A couple of glasses with each meal, however, should be no problem at all for a healthy person.

Teenagers today live in a very competitive world. It is more important than ever to succeed at school if you hope to have a chance in the job market afterwards. It's no wonder that many young people worry about letting down their parents, their classmates and themselves. In trying to please everyone, they take on too many tasks until it becomes harder and harder to balance homework, parties, sports activities and friends. The result is that young people suffer from stress.

There are different ways of dealing with stress. Everyone knows that caffeine, whether it is in the form of coffee or soft drinks, keeps you awake and active. But caffeine is a drug which can become addictive (上癮). In the end, like other drugs, caffeine only leads to more stress. A better way to deal with stress is to exercise. Research has proved that physical exercise is a good release for stress, because it increases certain chemicals in the brain which calm you down. Making sure you get enough sleep is also an important way of avoiding stress and of staying healthy and full of energy. Another way to avoid stress is to manage your time effectively. It is better to do a few tasks really well than lots of tasks badly. Know your limits and try not to take on too much. Finally, if it all gets beyond your control, don't panic or get hysterical (歇斯底里的). Find the time to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten to twenty minutes. Do this regularly, and it will help you calm down.
