第二部分:閱讀理解(共兩節(jié)。第一節(jié)20小題,第二節(jié)5小題;每小題2分,滿分50分)第一節(jié):閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)It had been a very disheartening day. The doctors had given us the worst of news. Our daughter, who had just completed her first brain surgery to remove a tumor and was going through radiation treatment, was now officially given a two percent chance of survival as this type of cancer had no cure.

My wife and I decided to take our daughter to lunch before continuing our afternoon conversation. We went to a local restaurant where we sat in silence waiting for the waitress. I noticed a very elderly couple sitting a few booths away, who were also in silence and did not speak a word. I couldn’t help but wonder what challenges they had faced in their life and if they ever faced such terrible news about a child of theirs.

We eventually ordered our lunch and still sitting in silence we ate what we could. At some point I became intrigued (好奇的) by the old couple. I thought to myself that they hadn’t yet spoken to each other and I wondered if it was the peace they were enjoying or the food or maybe both. However, at some point I lost interest and put my focus back on my lunch.

Molly was still talking away and enjoying her meal. Her mom and I both listened and tried to be happy in her presence but it wasn’t going very well. All of a sudden I saw a hand come out of nowhere. It was huge and I could tell that it had been afflicted with arthritis (關(guān)節(jié)炎). I couldn’t take my eyes off that hand. It landed on my daughter’s tiny six-year-old hand and as it did I looked up; it was the old woman who had been sitting with the old man in silence eating their lunch.

I looked into her eyes and she spoke, but not to me. She looked at my daughter and simply whispered, “If I could do more for you I would…” and then she smiled and moved away to join her husband, who had moved towards the door.

“Look, a whole dollar,” Molly spoke with excitement as she discovered a crumpled one dollar bill left behind by the old lady. I looked up to thank her, but she was gone. I sat stunned, not sure what had just happened and then I looked over at my wife. In almost unison, we broke out into a smile. The sadness of the day had been wiped out by the crippled hand and generous touch of the old lady. The dollar, although exciting to Molly, was not what made us smile; it was the offer from the old lady, who felt our suffering. The crippled hand symbolized a healing touch and made us realize that we did not have to fight this battle alone.

Nuclear energy has always been controversial. But since the tsunami and nuclear disaster in Fukushima (Japan) last year the issue is back in the headlines. And the world is pided— some countries are planning more nuclear plants, while others have promised to shut theirs down.

After Fukushima, Germany decided to switch off all its nuclear plants by 2022. Switzerland and Italy are also phasing out nuclear power. But France and the United States remain staunch supporters of atomic energy. In fact, almost 80% of France’s electricity comes from nuclear power, the highest percentage in the world. And in the US, the Obama administration said it “continues to support the expansion of nuclear power, despite the crisis in Japan.”

Nuclear supporters claim nuclear power can help the environment. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear power doesn’t create greenhouse gases. So, pro-nuclear countries argue that nuclear power allows them to generate energy without contributing to climate change. Britain’s chief scientific adviser (John Beddington) supports this view. He recently said that the world doesn’t have the luxury of ignoring nuclear energy.

Nuclear power is also relatively cheap. Renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro and wind power may be clean, but they’re expensive; and right now, they require a lot of investment. This higher cost of using “green energy” is usually passed onto the consumer. So, while many people may prefer their energy to come from a renewable source, not so many are prepared to pay higher energy bills. This is of particular concern while the world economy is in such bad shape.

The main argument against nuclear energy is that it isn’t safe. For a start, nuclear waste is very difficult to dispose of, and remains toxic to humans for thousands of years. And even before Fukushima, there were several high-profile nuclear disasters. The most famous is probably the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, in the Ukraine. The radiation from the meltdown spread all over Europe, affecting thousands.

The nuclear energy issue is very complex. And it doesn’t look like it’ll be resolved anytime soon. As a Japanese commentator recently said, “it’s been a bad year for the ‘nuclear village’, but I don’t think they’re down and out yet.” The battle continues.

  【文章選自《海外英語》2012年02月 “Nuclear Power”】

  51. Which of the following may NOT be the advantage of nuclear energy over other energy sources? 【原創(chuàng)】

  A. Nuclear energy doesn’t produce any greenhouse gases.

  B. Nuclear energy can help prevent the climate damage.

  C. Nuclear energy is more environmental-friendly than other green energy sources.

  D. Nuclear energy can save the consumers some money, compared to other renewable energies.

  52. What does the underlined word “this ” refer to in paragraph 4? 【原創(chuàng)】

  A. The fact that many people prefer to use the green energy sources while unwilling to pay

  higher bill.

  B. The cost of using renewable sources

  C. The fact that the nuclear power is cheaper.

  D. The investment of renewable energy sources

In the 5th paragraph, the author takes the case of Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine to _______.

  【原創(chuàng)】

  A. convince the reader that nuclear waste is difficult to get rid of.

  B. explain that nuclear waste may remain harmful to humans for thousands of years.

  C. persuade the world not to use nuclear energy.

  D. support the idea that nuclear energy is not safe.

We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.【原創(chuàng)】

  A. the Japanese commentator is positive about the future of nuclear energy.

  B. the nuclear energy issue will be soon settled.

  C. a battle will break out in the future.

  D. Japan is considering to build a nuclear village in the future.

What is the author's purpose of writing the passage? 【原創(chuàng)】

  A. To highlight the danger of using nuclear energy.

  B. To introduce some serious nuclear disasters.

  C. To show the argument between nuclear supporters and protesters.

  D. To give some advice on how to use nuclear energy safely.

When was the last time you laughed a lot? Most people are the victim of an uncontrollable fit of laughter at least once in their lives. But when it happens in front of the television cameras, it can become an internet sensation.

Do you think there’s anything funny about spicy meat? Swiss finance minister Hans-Rudolf Merz seemed to think it was hilarious. Mr. Merz was making a speech in the Swiss parliament on meat imports when he started laughing and couldn’t stop. The meat in question is known as “bündnerfleisch”— a type of air-dried beef product. Herr Merz later admitted that he was amused by the bureaucratic(官僚主義的) language in which the bill was written.

Since then, Mr. Merz has become an internet hit. A video of the incident shows a grey-suited minister giggling away, accompanied by applause from his parliamentary colleagues. So far, the video has been seen by more than 500,000 people on YouYube and other websites. “I don’t understand what he’s talking about,” said one viewer, “but it’s just so funny.” The recent publicity will be good news for the minister, too. Mr. Merz had been criticized recently for signing away much of Switzerland’s banking secrecy, and for failing to do enough to help two Swiss citizens who were detained by Libya. But now, with retirement a few months away, Mr. Merz may leave on a high note. Some even suggest he may have a future career as a comedian.

Of course, Mr. Merz isn’t the first person to crack up on air. BBC Radio 4 newsreader Charlotte Green lost control on the programme Today not so long ago. It all happened after a clip of the oldest known recording of the human voice was played. A studio member remarked that the 1860 recording of a woman singing the French song “Au Clair de la Lune” sounded like a “bee buzzing in a bottle”. That seemed to set Ms. Green off as she broke down into a fit of the giggles. Later, the editor of the show, Ceri Thomas, said most listeners who contacted the show had commented on “how much they had enjoyed the moment”. He added, “When Charlotte loses it, she really loses it.”

So, why do we get these fits of laughter? Experts say it’s a form of release. Nervous tension often builds up inside us, especially in those who have got high-pressure, stressful jobs. When stressed out, the body constricts(收縮) blood vessels, elevates the production of potentially damaging stress hormones, and raises blood pressure. Short periods of stress are normal and not dangerous, but over long periods of time stress weakens the immune system and makes heart problems more likely. Under the control of self-protecting mechanisms of human body, this pressure needs an outlet, usually manifesting itself through tears, anger or laughter— uncontrollable fits of laughter!

So, beware! That uncontrollable laughing fit could strike at any moment.

Meanwhile, what I want to emphasis is that, as a monitor, he was very responsible for his work. I still remember that our head teacher went to hospital because of a severely headache one day and left him in the charge of the whole class. To my surprise, he looked like a head teacher exactly, and made the class in perfect order! I really looked up to him. A disabled boy as he was, he always turned out the top student in every test. It was such great efforts that were made despite all the difficulty in the school year that contributed to his success. Now, although we are in different schools, we still keep touch with each other, discussing the problems in studies and share our happiness and sorrow. I do hope he does well in his study and makes progress every day!

第二節(jié) One possible student version: Legal Affairs Office of the State Council of China publicized the exposure draft of School Bus Safety Regulations on Dec. 11th, 2011 to collect public opinions.

During the past year, there have been several severe school bus accidents which claimed many young lives. These tragedies came as a shock to everyone, and they have aroused great concern among people from all walks of life. The publication of the draft regulations indicate that our government has realized how serious the situation is and that it is taking effective measures to ensure the safety of the school bus.

The draft regulations reflect a deep concern from our government as well as from the public about students’ lives. When put into effect, the regulations will surely help reduce the number of accidents and benefit schools and families as well. Besides, they will be of vital importance in stabling the society.

Personally, I fully support the coming out of the regulations, and I sincerely hope that everyone in our society will obey the regulations. What’s more, the regulations should be strictly carried out.
